Meet Me

Sukhmani Khorana is an Associate Professor and Scientia Fellow at the School of the Arts and Media, University of New South Wales. Previously, she was a Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Wollongong. Sukhmani has a national profile and recognition across the universities she has worked at, as demonstrated by her being named a ‘UOW Impact Maker’ in 2018, and being awarded a local ‘Research Engagement’ award at WSU in 2021. She received four overseas invites to present work and collaborate during her sabbatical in 2019, and these are testament to her growing international reputation for work on media and migration. 

Sukhmani’s research publications and grants span three main areas: migrant cultures and cultural production, refugee media and empathy, and food/ sustainability in multicultural contexts.
She has extensive experience in collaborating with media and arts organisations, young people, and government agencies on projects benefiting diverse communities. With Kate Darian-Smith and Sue Turnbull, Sukhmani was a CI on an ARC Linkage Project, ‘Migration, Cultural Diversity and Television: Reflecting Modern Australia’ (2016-2021).
Career
Appointed Australian node leader of the international ‘Justice, Arts and Migration’ (JAM) network in 2020. The JAM Network was formed between Lincoln (UK) and Hong Kong in 2018 to interrogate the role of arts practice in articulating the status of citizenship and belonging for migrant demographics, to deploy creative research methodologies.
Research monograph re-published in paperback format in 2019 due to high sale volumes. Also attracted reviews from five leading international scholars of food and migration studies, and nominated by Mascara Literary Journal for the Avant-Garde Awards.
Nominated for an excellence in undergraduate teaching award at UOW’s Liverpool campus in 2018.
Appointed a 21C Fellow at Western Sydney University in the ‘Global Citizens’ program.
